Physical Characterization

Physical Characterization

Responsible: Walter Schnelle

Coworker: Ralf Koban

A basic screening of new compounds and materials created in the Inorganic Chemistry and Chemical Metal Science departments is the task of the Physical Characterization labs. Special provisions have been developed which allow also measurements on highly air and moisture sensitive materials. The instrumentation is also used for in-depth physical investigations, e.g. of skutterudites, borides, thermoelectics, borophosphates, carbometalates, nitrides, low-dimensional spin systems and novel superconductors.

Magnetization / magnetic susceptibility
- SQUID magnetometer, 1.8K-400K or 300K-800K
- magnetic field 0.1mT-7.0T
- 2 axis sample rotator
- range up to 300emu
- pressure cells up to 1.5GPa

Specific heat capacity
- relaxation method 1.8K-380K, magnetic field to 9T
- high-accuracy measurements for thermodynamics
- adiabatic scanning method 5K-320K

Electrical transport properties
- dc resistivity 4K-320K, also highly air sensitive samples
- powder samples, high-resistivity materials
- ac resistivity 1.8K-380K, magnetic field -9T to +9T

Magneto-electrical and thermal transport properties
- 1.8K-380K, magnetic field -9T to +9T
- transversal and longitudinal magnetoresistance
- Hall effect
- Thermopower (Seebeck coefficient, 1.8K-380K and 300K-1300K)
- Thermal conductivity (1.8K-380K)
- Thermal diffusivity (Laser Flash, 190K-1270K)
