Electron Microscopy - TEM preparation

To prepare electron transparent specimens a laboratory was equipped with all the well-established methods for mechanical and electrolytic thinning as well as ion polishing (Uta Köhler). In addition, an ultra-microtome is used to produce thin sections –mainly of biomineral composites (Jana Buder). For the targeted preparation of oriented TEM lamellae, e.g. from single crystals or aggregates of biomineralisation, a FIB Quanta 200 3D is available (Dr. W. Carrillo-Cabrera). This instrument may also be used for SEM tomography.
